Dr Anna MacDonald
I'm a molecular ecologist - I use DNA to study wildlife. I use genetic methods to inform wildlife management and policy. Molecular tools can tell us about the species present in an ecosystem, what they eat, how they interact with each other and with humans, and how genetically healthy they are. My current projects focus on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and include environmental DNA (eDNA), scat DNA, and population genetics work.
I'm also interested in conservation genetics and the protection of genetic diversity within species. I'm a co-chair of the GEOBON Genetic Composition Working Group, and a member of the IUCN SSC Conservation Genetics Specialist Group and the Coalition for Conservation Genetics. We work to improve tools and resources for evaluating, monitoring, and reporting on genetic diversity.
